Extreme Vocals Vocologist | Voice Function Specialist™ | Independent Researcher I Producer | encourager

An uncommon HUMAN Encouraging Uncommon VOICES

Anita Marie Martin brings a Creative Industries, Entertainment Business, and Music Industry mindset to an independent Speech, Singing, Screaming, Teaching, and Vocology practice spanning 32 years. Working with elite vocal athletes since 1994, Anita Marie Martin became the world's first practising Extreme Vocals Vocologist in 2012, participating in medically steered Vocology teams that work together to rehabilitate and habilitate professional voice users' priceless voices.

Anita Marie brought her pioneering functional extreme vocals praxis to the international stage at the 8th International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT) in 2013, under the supervision of academic legends Dr Irene Bartlett and Dr Brydie-Lee Bartleet. IN her presentation “Hearing screamers: Adding Extreme Vocal Effects to Your Student's Colour Palette” Anita Marie introduced her term 'Voice Function Specialist' (VFS) to the academic world defining VFS work extends into the uncharted zones of voice use beyond accepted Vocal Pedagogy and Vocology working a the nexus of voice science and education. Innovation continued in 2017 with Australia’s first Vocology for Singing Voice Teachers Professional Development event in Brisbane. As convenor, Anita championed the theme, "Who's On Your Team: Empowering singing teachers by engaging with health professionals." When the academic world was still treating Extreme Vocal distortion as a pathology, Anita Marie was busy decoding its mechanics and asking what questions teachers might better ask of Voice Science. This timeline of Vocal Pedagogy and Vocology ingenuity predates much of modern Vocology and Extreme Vocals certification. Anita Marie’s dedication to advancing the field continues to set new global gold standards.

Inspiring Extreme Vocals heavyweight coaches like Melissa Cross and Cathrine Sadolin with Anita Marie's Speak, Sing, Scream model, Anita Marie’s work completely strips away the irreplicable nature of commercial and institutional vocal methods that don't account for the long standing measures of science that cuttng-edge high-performance artistry must rely on to advance the field. Instead, Anita Marie teaches voice within the Scientific Method, encouraging clients to become Voice-Science Literate so they can conduct their own vocal self-experiments against the measuring stick and rigour of science.

As a Voice Function SPECIALIST™ with a precise yet practice-led craft, Anita Marie made history in 2025 becoming the first Extreme Vocals Specialist to attend the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Science-Informed Vocal Pedagogy Institute at the University of Texas San Antonio, studying with Lynn Helding, John Nix, Allen Henderson, and Amelia Rollings Bigler.

Anita Marie is actively involved in Pedagogy-Informed Voice Science, constantly reimagining how practice and research intersect. Recognition as "the future of vocal pedagogy" speaks to this dynamic approach. Ongoing professional education has led to real-world experiences in the physical fragility and resilience of the voice, including hands-on wet-lab anatomy (yes she’s touched the cadavers) experience at Griffith University and advanced studies as an Acoustic Vocal Pedagogue under Ken Bozeman.

This methodology bridges the gap between primal, high-load distortion and elite classical precision. Training with the powerhouse team of Dr Ron Morris and Janice Chapman, and drawing influence from Dan Chalfin's Primal Voice™ work, has shaped this approach. True stylistic versatility was independently validated by a 2020 Griffith University study. At that time, Anita stood out as the only vocal pedagogue in Australia who consistently taught all musical genres at a high-performance level, including World Musics.

As Australia's only Contemporary Singing Voice Specialist and Extreme Vocals Specialist certified in Walt Fritz’s Swallowing and Voice Disorders manual therapy work (2018 and 2024), support is provided to elite touring vocalists seeking vocal systems unloading, regardless of genre. Anita Marie’s Integration and expansion work founded on contemporary frameworks continues as the first Extreme Vocals Specialist to be certified in Somatic Voicework™ (Levels 1, 2, and 3, including Soul Ingredients), ever adjusting studio pedagogy protocols to meet the specific scientific demands of her high-intensity praxis.

Operating as a Vocal Health and Mental Health First Aider, and standing as the first openly neurodiverse Vocal Pedagogue and Vocologist in Australia in an academic forum, Anita Marie acts as a peer-support worker in the Music and Entertainment Industries. This human-centred, artist-first, data-driven framework ensures artists of all styles and backgrounds can deliver devastatingly powerful performances on tour without sacrificing long-term vocal or mental health.

Anita Marie's research continues as an Independent Researcher. In 2025, Anita Marie presented “Practice Informed Lens Literature and Artefact Review” as a new Search and Review method at the 2025 International Society for Metal Music Studies Conference in Seville, Spain. P.I.L.L.A.R. arose from the sorrow of losing long-time colleague, collaborator, and student, the late Elizabeth Savina (Speech Language Pathologist and so much more), to cancer. The research was also underpinned by the deep passion Benjamin Enugine (Benny Staxx - ex front man from Tomb of Doom) has for the Brisbane Metal scene who introduced Anita Marie to the local Brisbane Extreme Metal scene and its culture. Anita Marie and Dr Diletta Calibeo have a forthcoming Duoethnographic contribution to Susana González-Martínez's New Metal Worlds: Hybridism in Extreme Music, focusing on feminist identity and resilience in music-making among women working within the Extreme Metal Music world.

Anita Marie is not your typical singing teacher. in 2006, After the passing of her Grandfather, Juan Saldivar I, Anita Marie was given a small $300 inheritance. Anita Marie used the gift to begin formalising her popular music studies at the Metropolitan South Institute of Technology under Mark Kerle and Andrea Smith. Anita Marie had a penchant for songwriting, production, rapping, and extended vocal techniques often coming in early and staying late to practise all she could. in 2007 Anita Marie moved on to Southbank TAFE’s Rock School Studying with Mary Carden, Ian Taylor, Ross Williams, and Ross McLennan. At the insistence of Donna Hewitt, in 2008 Anita Marie became one of the first females to train in the Bachelor of Music Sound production studying under Mike Howlett, Julian Knowles, the late Steven dillon, John Willsteed, Yanto Browning, Brad Millard, Greg Jenkins, Chris Perrin, Briony Luttrell, Phil Graham & a cast of thousands. Unconventionally Anita Marie studied two years production followed by two years performance whcih cemented her hybrid praxis of voice function, executive production, and vocal production. Anita Marie has ghostwritten, executive produced, and pre-pro’d for thousands of independent artists in australia amassing millions of streams across the world ranging from speed trap rap, to indie rock, Country, to metal core, to doom, symphonic metal, and blackened death.
