EXTREME VOCALS & VOICE FUNCTION SPECIALIST
ANITA MARIE MARTIN
An uncommon HUMAN Encouraging Uncommon VOICES
“Always look to be uncommon amongst uncommon people. Never look to just get the invitation and fit in.”
David GoggINS
I don’t fit in - thank goodness!
I’ve always stood out! I’m captivated by the rare, the raw, and the rebellious - the uncommon people who use their voices to challenge convention and carve out new sonic territoryI'm an Activist, an Encourager, and for 31 years, a Vocal Arts Educator for those who want to paint with their voice according to their heart’s desire with 14-years of that working with Extreme Vocalists.
I’m known for helping people find their voice by speaking truth to the reflection they see [and hear] in the mirror of you vs you. If you’ve ever ben told your voice was “too much,” “too weird,” or “too little” — I’m here to tell you: it’s not - you’re not! You are enough and with someone in your corner [someone like me] who understands how to help you use your voice your way, together we will unchain your authentic voice!
What I Do
I help artists master powerful, sustainable vocal techniques across a wide range of styles — from extreme metal and R&B to musical theatre, jazz, classical, hyperpop, world musics, and even country including spaghetti western.
Im not your average voice teacher. I specialize in the “extra-normal voice”: distortion, growling, screaming, whistle and more — the stuff that most teachers either don’t understand or try to silence. I’ll show you how to do it based on the most up to date voice science there is, confidently, and without apology.
Science-Informed. Soul-Fueled.
In 2025, I became the only extreme vocals teacher in the world [to date] to complete the NATS Science-Informed Voice Pedagogy Institute at the University of Texas at San Antonio — and it changed everything! Especially everything I thought about me [I am indeed an Extreme Vocals & Voice Function Specialist - there’s no hiding it anymore]!
This year I also presented at the 7th Biennial International Research Conference on Metal Music Studies, where I shared my new research method that came out of 15 years of auto-ethnographic and ethnographic research on teaching elite and extended vocal techniques including extreme vocals. In the past I’ve also been a pioneer of the extreme vocals pedagogy field presenting at Australian and International Conferences on vocal sustainability and pedagogy for distortion-based singing.
I back up my teaching with deep understanding of voice science, manual therapy, and mental health support, including:
Being an accredited Whole Body Massage Practitioner
Certified in Manual Therapy for Voice and Swallowing Disorders
Accredited in Standard, Youth, and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid
Because your vocal health is your whole health — body, mind, and spirit.
The Artist Behind the Educator
You’ll usually find me with a pot of white tea, reading rare vocal pedagogy texts, volunteering for mental health organisations, out in nature [love me some sea or forest bathing] or adding to my growing collection of antique sheet music, rare books, and literal rocks [not the band kind].
I’m a poet. A photographer. A noise-maker. A thinker. A musician. A producer. A composer. A songwriter. A frustrated pianist. A third-generation music teacher who began singing lessons at age 3 and started teaching at 13. 2025 marks the 106th year of the Martin family's music teaching legacy — and I’m proud to carry that torch.
My Teaching Philosophy
I believe:
Anyone with a healthy speaking voice can learn to sing, scream, speak, or soar.
Vocal technique should serve your emotions, not shut them down.
Mental health matters just as much as vocal health. You’ve got to have a growth mindset.
Your voice doesn’t need fixing. It needs allowing and freeing!
I’m here to help you face what’s holding you back, speak, sing, or scream your truth, and make loud noise with your whole self.
Let’s Work Together
If you’ve ever felt like your voice doesn’t belong — welcome home!
Let’s explore your full vocal potential, in a brave, creative, and scientifically grounded space.
